Nature Explorers Club~Bolsa Chica Wetlands

The latest adventure for our club was to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Cynthia found this winner and the kids had an amazing time. There was so much to see and experience! This was an easy trail with tons of bird activity and lots of new plants to observe. The kids had a lot to enter into their nature journals. Some things to find here include crabs, California Poppy, Bladderpod Bush, squirrels, Sandpipers, Terns, Herons, California Horn Snail and an unidentified snake!

Can't wait to see what we'll run across!

Keeping a Nature Journal/Notebook

Creating a nature journal/notebook is a good way for your child to slow down and be able to enjoy and take in all that God has created around them. It is also an effective way to foster good observation skills, greater appreciation of nature and an expression of their creative side.

As you go on nature walks and hikes with your children, encourage their curiosity and spark their interests in the natural world around them by encouraging them to take notice of things around them. Don't be intimidated-you don't need to know the names or details about the creature/insect/plant in question! Just encourage their curiosity and help to spark their interest with simple statements or questions. (“Wow, look at the stripes on the squirrel's tail!”, “I wonder why this flower is closed at night.”)
Tools to remember anytime you are on a nature excursion are:
Colored pencils/watercolor pencils
Paper/watercolor paper
Pencils, sharpener, eraser
Pen
Clipboard
Ziplock for collecting fallen leaves/objects of interest(can even be glued into notebook)
flower press (super simple to make: 2-8 1/2x6 pieces of cardboard, folded printer paper, 2 rubber bands

No official template is needed, but can be helpful if desired. There are numerous ways to record in a nature journal/notebook. Here is one that I found that may be helpful when doing a page.:

I.Basic Information(record the following info on the upper or lower corner of page. For the younger ones, just let them draw whatever and wherever til their heart is content and forget about formats!)
  1. Name- If using loose pages or not on outside of book
  2. Date- This will help establish the season and month. Take notice of how things change during different times of the year
  3. Place-Where are you observing? Compare habitats.
  4. Time-Doesn't necessarily have to be accurate clock time; can simply be early morning, late afternoon, etc. Activity of animals will be different at different times of day.
  5. Weather-Affects most living things. Is it sunny, overcast, windy?
  6. First impressions-What do you hear? Are there any smells in the air?
  7. Cloud cover, pattern-Cloud cover can be recorded by drawing a small box and drawing the clouds that you see in the sky. Add a description if desired.
II.Begin Drawing(having a sequence of observation may be helpful. This pattern gets you in the habit of observing all around you.)
    1. Ground Observation-Even if partially paved, notice any leaves, flowers, rocks, insects. Draw 2-3 objects and move on. For further learning, ask or write one question about each object: How did it get there?Where does it go in winter? Can it be found in other habitats?
    2. Eye-Level Observation-Particular leaves, tall plants, shrubs, low nests, birds, insects. Describe what it's doing or what's it part of.
    3. Overhead Observations-Look up! Choose a tree, bird, insect, the sky and just draw!
The more you practice focusing and observing, the more you will see and enjoy everything around you.

The Fall of Azov and Other Small Victories

This week marked the end of our Christmas break and the return to the daily homeschool grind.  I'm sure it would be no shock to you if I told you that the kids were not very enthusiastic about starting school again.  I originally planned to start back up last week and actually did get one day in. It was not an encouraging start! I planned to keep it light-only doing history, science and writing. We got through the history lesson with ease and moved on to writing. I excitingly promised the kids that after writing and science we would do the activity that went along with history. Three loooooong hours later,  the kids STILL doing their writing, I was on the verge of mommy break down. Project you ask? Uh, denied. Mommy calmly explained that since the children could not focus and diligently do a simple writing assignment, there would be no "Peter the Great and the Fall of Azov" activity. Queue the pouty faces and whiny voices. There was hope still, I encouraged. We would officially start up this week and do the activity at the end of day one, which was yesterday. Once again there were some diligence issues not to mention a big dose of sibling rivalry, biblical correction (read: the rod) and a good talking to from Mommy about the peaceable fruit of righteousness chastening brings by those that are trained by it! (Hebrews 12:11) But my friends, after much much praying last night and this morning-victory! Today went beautifully, school accomplished quickly and with no (major) issues, and yes, you guessed it,  the long awaited for "Fall of Azov"! I hope you enjoy watching it as much as they enjoyed finally doing it. Peter the Great and the Fall of Azov in Lego

Nature Explorers Club~Marshall Canyon Trail

What a gorgeous day for a hike!  The Nature Explorers Club met this month for a new hike at Marshall Canyon Trail. The weather could not have been more perfect. Not only that, but we had a new family join us today~Yay!! Okay, so maybe I bullied them into coming, but hey, whatever gets the job done! All the kids had a blast and even the little ones made it back to the cars on their own two feet. Can't wait til the next hike!
Look what we spotted!

Look at those clouds!

Look! Dino truck skeletons!

All the oak trees make this a beautiful retreat

Is there anyone else I'd rather photograph??!

Nature Explorers Club~Bailey Canyon Park

The Nature Explorers Club finally went on our first hike of the new school year~yay!! I definitely wanted to try some new hikes this year and internet-stumbled upon one not too far from our house. The location was Bailey Canyon Park in Sierra Madre and we braved the Canyon View Nature Trail to the water fall. It was an awesome and enjoyable hike. With the recent rains we've had, everything was looking so fresh and green! The hike was pretty easy. There are some spots that the young ones need some help traversing, but nothing impossible! Part of the hike does include a very steep section, but it was definitely worth it and we could all use a little more exercise, right?! Although the waterfall is seasonal, we were lucky enough to see a little trickle still coming down. What a beautiful day it was to enjoy God's wondrous creation!
Okay, so maybe this pic isn't so nature-y!

Headin' off
Love being outdoors!
Always time for a photo op!
Thanks for leading the pack!

Yes, one of these is an adult! ;)

Time for a quick nap!

"No kids, we didn't say 'waterfall', we said 'wetwall'"
